What the chart shows

Forward strips

Each curve is the NYMEX settlement for every listed contract month on a given day: WTI light sweet crude in dollars per barrel and Henry Hub natural gas in dollars per MMBtu. New strips are added on the first trading day of each month from CME Group settlement data.

Realized spot

The dashed line is the monthly average spot price published by the U.S. Energy Information Administration — WTI at Cushing, Oklahoma and Henry Hub, Louisiana — so a strip from any date can be compared with the prices that followed.

Strip history

The 12-, 36- and 60-month strips are the simple averages of the first 12, 36 and 60 contract months of each curve. They are the figures most often used in reserve evaluations, bank price decks and hedging decisions.
